I don't know much about the Quaker religion, but there were many discussions on the Bible and how prayer would guide and console them. This was an exciting, yet fearful story, of three young Quakers leading a young married slave family to freedom. The story was well written and the narration was excellent!
A good mix of internal and external conflict, with Flora and Bruce's longstanding antipathy towards one another and the need to keep the escaped slaves safe. They are two flawed but likeable characters...Path of Freedom got off to a good start with a two page explanation of the (disputed) history of underground code quilts, and the involvement of Quakers in the Underground Railroad....I think this is my favorite so far, and I will certainly keep my eyes open for more books in this series, and more novels by Jennifer Hudson Taylor.
This story involves a sweet romance and compelling period in American history. I enjoyed learning about the Quakers in 19th century NC and the role the Quakers played in the Underground Railroad. As a child, Flora had been bullied and she comes to empathize deeply with the suffering of the runaway slaves. Her journey to forgiveness is compelling as is the love story in Path of Freedom.
Quick-paced and thoughtful, the story engages questions about forgiveness, justice, and whether it's ok to lie for the right cause. The setting among Quakers is fresh to me. Readers of historical inspy romance will enjoy yet another of Taylor's solid romances.
